This is the
3rd announcement (PDF) of the International LHD Workshop.
This workshop will take place
from Monday, 15 February to Friday, 19 February, 2027
at
Nagoya Noh Theater
in Nagoya, Japan.
The workshop will include a mix of invited lectures, contributed talks, and poster presentations.
The LHD Workshop is organized by
National Institute for Fusion Science.
To encourage the participation of as many people as possible,
we have decided not to charge a registration fee. We hope this will make it easier for you to participate.
The LHD experimental program was successfully completed on 25 December, 2025, marking the conclusion of approximately 28 years of operation. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all collaborators for their invaluable support, which made it possible to carry out the experiments safely and continuously over this long period. Although the experimental program has come to an end, the research network built around LHD remains an irreplaceable and valuable asset. We hope to continue our collaboration through future research activities in post-LHD projects, as well as through further studies based on LHD experimental data.
Registration and Abstract submission
Registration and abstract submission for the International LHD Workshop are now open.
We invite abstracts for contributed oral presentations and posters.
To register and submit an abstract, please select "Registration & Abstract Submission"
from the top menu on this website.
The abstract submission deadline is 16 October 2026.
Although there is no registration fee, all participants are required to register by 15 January 2027.
Participants requiring
visa support
must register by 13 November 2026.
After registration, we will request additional information, including flight details and hotel information,
to begin the visa-support process.
We therefore encourage you to make your travel and accommodation arrangements as early as possible.
Symposia
We plan to organize two symposia in addition to regular oral and poster sessions.
The tentative titles and descriptions of the symposia are as follows.
Data-Driven Research Enabled by Open LHD Data
This symposium will explore new frontiers in AI-enabled research using publicly available experimental
data from the Large Helical Device (LHD). By applying machine learning and data-driven scientific approaches,
participants will seek to deepen their understanding of plasma phenomena--including transport,
magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and turbulence--and explore opportunities for international collaboration in
advancing predictive modeling and experimental data analysis.
Lessons from LHD: What Should We Carry Forward Before the Dawn of Fusion Energy?
This symposium will provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge accumulated over many
years of LHD research, including (1) scientific achievements, (2) experimental methods,
(3) diagnostic technologies, and (4) expertise in device operation.
It will identify both the key lessons learned from LHD and the challenges that have yet to be addressed,
while discussing research strategies and priority areas for the post-LHD era as the dawn of
fusion energy approaches.

The banquet will be held on 18 February 2027, at

in central Nagoya.
The venue is housed in a historic building completed in 1926 as
the head office of the former Nagoya Bank.

The banquet fee is JPY 8,000 per person. Accompanying guests are also most welcome.
